The inline controls on my headphones do nothing (MBPr, Mountain Lion 10.8.3)

I'm using Ultimate Ears 600vi headphones with "inline controls". I've also tested it with a stock Apple pair of headphones, neither work on the MBPr but they work fine on my iPad / iPhone.

The specific controls I'm talking about are the Volume up / Play / Volume Down buttons which some headphones have on them. I would like these to work the same similar to the built in keyboard short cuts like Volume Up / Play&Pause / Volume Down...

Any suggestions? I can't find any solutions...
