That is how DVCPRO-HD works, there's nothing wrong. From Wikipedia:

"DVCPRO HD uses smaller raster size than broadcast high definition television: 960x720 pixels for 720p, 1280x1080 for 1080/59.94i and 1440x1080 for 1080/50i. Similar horizontal downsampling is used in many other HD formats. To maintain compatibility with HD-SDI, DVCPRO100 equipment upsamples video during playback."

960x720 is a 1280x720 output. The difference exists in how the image is encoded. If you set up a custom 960x720 project the exported media will still be displayed at 1280x720 resolution. The difference in the project settings has to do with pixel calculations made for things like title position. The stretching I referred to has to do with pixel aspect ratio where the 4:3 encoded pixels are read as 16:9 video (it's an inherited headache from previous codecs like DV). The 960 encoded pixels are read/decoded as 1280 pixels and the codec's compression compensates for the difference, so the image shouldn't look stretched. If it does look stretched it may be an issue with the optimized media. FCP X has native support for DVCPRO HD so you should be fine using the original footage. And according to a knowledge base article I looked at FCP X tries to prevent you from creating optimized media with the codec, so maybe the footage is being misinterpreted somewhere. If you can provide a picture of QT inspector or even better a sample clip I could help more.

This is how the original footage looks as shot. 960 x 720.User uploaded file

This is how it looks in fcpx. Upon import it changes and nothing I do inside fcpx seems to change it. How can I keep it looking like above in fcpx? I've tried optimizing and not optimizing media. Also, I cant find any other settings to try like DVCPRO HD. Ive also tried spatial conform settings and didnt work.

I'm going to be more concise so hopefully I can get a concise answer.

This footage was shot on an iPhone 5 in Socialcam. It was saved to my camera roll then imported into fcpx. The aspect ratio is 960 x 720. I want it to look as it was shot, screen shot 1.

It is looking like screen shot 2 due to it being imported as 1280 x 720. How can I preserve the 960 x 720 aspect ratio in fcpx. I don't mind if it has "bat wings". I just dont want it looking squeezed.

Can anyone answer that question with making judgements about iPhone video, Socialcam, DVCPRO HD or anything else?

I would just like to know if anyone has the answer. I've done 3 days of research and dont have the answer. Thanks.
