I have a macbook pro mid 2009, and my question is, is it safe to download java yet? i was planning on playing a game but it said that I needed the java plug-in, so I don't know if I should install it or not. Thanks

No, there seems to be a vulnerability reported by programmer, but Oracle says it's a feature and they are going back and forth if it's a exploitable or not which the researcher says it is and Oracle saying it's not and if they fix it it would break Java.
So since the vulnerability is known, it's exploitable it's only a matter of if and when, then Oracle will be screwed as well as those who install Java.
Oracle is working on Java 8, which should fix the problem pernamently.

Yeah, right, and break more stuff along the way. Cursed be the day we had to upgrade to Java 7, no longer can I run the Unisphere applet to control my EMC VNX storage server. So now I have to keep a virtualized Win7 and use Explorer!
