Why will Avi videos not play

Can't play videos. These videos are from a business surveillance camera, showing the parking lot, copied from original computer which could play the videos. Each file ends with .Avi but when I try to play in various programs either nothing happens, or it plays a blank screen. The program VLC gave me a message saying "VLC does not support the audio or video format "GMP4." What program will play these videos?
