how to use my iphone in a different country

how can i use my phone in a different country without my carrier charging me. i asked some of m friends and they said that if i turn on my airplane mode and then turn on my wifi and connect to it, it will work but i am not sure. can you please tell me any other suggestions that you know might help. thank you very much!
