I have started my computer in safe mode as recommended but not long after the grey Apple icon appears with the spinning gear it automatically shuts down! any suggestions?

Thanks, that seems to have done something.
However, it now seems to be stuck on a blue screen, but I can see the mouse arrow on screen, but cannot do anything else.
Also apparent it started happening when an adobe flash cd was put in to install and the disk is still in the drive but I can't seem to eject it!
