8 GB ram module in Apple iMac 2.93GHz Intel Quad Core i7

Does anybody know if it is possible to use 8 GB RAM modules in an mid 2010 Apple iMac 2.93GHz Intel Quad Core i7? the max ram for this machine was given with 16 GB (4x 4GB), but i think that in 2010 there where no 8 GB modules available yet with the 204 pin formfactor?!

or is the 16 GB limit because of the system?

The Mid 2010 iMac supports 16 GB of memory officially, but you can install 32 GB of memory without any problem, so you can use a 8 GB RAM module without any problem. You can get the memory in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2010/DDR3_21.5_27

As mende says that machine will actually support 32 GB of ram, for details you can see http://www.everymac.com for any Mac equipment.

Be sure to only buy ram from Mac specialists as timing of the DIMM modules is critical. OWC and Crucial are the best and guarantee their ram to work. Avoid low-cost brands such as Kingston Value Ram and Corsair Vengeance as we have had a few users the past couple of weeks with the Corsair ram that would not work in a Mac. That is primarily PC ram being sold to people to use in Macs, and it is not accurate enough for a Mac.
