My Mac Pro keeps restarting & I don't know why

Hi,

It's happened three times now, twice when I was asleep and once when I actually witnessed it happen.

When I saw it happen, it was as if someone had pulled the power plug out of the back, it was that quick. I was typing along and suddenly zap, it powered off instantly! It wasn't a power outage - I have a UPS with a loud obnoxious alarm, so I'd have know were that the case. Besides, in all three instances I checked the clocks in the house and none of them were flashing 12:00, it wasn't a power outage.

When it happens, it reboots immediately (of course that's not instant, it takes the usual amount of time to boot up), and it's waiting at the login screen.

I'm getting concerned, and I'd sure like it to stop doing this. Especially considering what I paid for this machine (around $7,000, not counting the monitor and all the extras)

It's a Mac Pro, 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon running 10.8.3.

At one point I bought more ram (32GB) and I honestly can't remember if the first time it restarted was before or after I had bought this ram or after. Could bad ram explain it? If so, can I test it? Other thoughts I've had - can a failing hard drive do that? I didn't think so but I don't know. Or maybe a surge from a device that's connecting via USB (not all my usb devices are going through my UPS)? Bad ram?? It'd be great it if were something simplie like a failing power supply, I really hope it's not the motherboard or CPU.

I'm not quite sure how to read the "Problem Details and System Configuration" upon restart (the dialog box that comes up explaining that the computer was restarted because of a problem, and would I like to send a report to Apple), but I've pasted that info below my message.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

Yes, FBDIMMs can but more likely to be the PSU.

What else is on the circuit with your UPS? anything? as for loud... older APC? how old?

If you want to use it for peripherals or other uses CyberPower has some nice 1500VA SMART units for under $200.

Yes you can test memory, first with AHT but then with memtest - though with 32GB

take out and test pairs at a time or half, run memtest in terminal with each process checking 1GB and you can run 32 windows to do the testing. A memtest CD is handy. There are some utilities that would run in the sngle user mode on startup too which is better but of course take forever to test every GB.

When these happen, any unsaved changes to the directory or files that are open are lost and you should do as a minimum a Safe Boot and/or ML Recovery and repair the drive(s) with Disk Utility. Doesn't hurt to do a Safe boot afterwards as well to rebuild and remove cached and temp files and then restart to have a regular startup.

Monitor your temps. Esp. the FBDIMMs but also PSU and anything else. And boost the fan rpm as well.

how long have you used ML, Lion or since you last used 10.6.8? Did it start since 10.8.3 even?

In a Mac Pro 65lb tower, this is unlikely to be a RAM memory problem, because the machines have Error correcting Code memories. Single-bit errors are corrected on the fly. A double-bit error halts with distinctive Machine-check reason (to avoid poisoning you data).

Mac OS X kernel does not experience kernel panic very often. But you are not running un-modified Mac OS X kernel, you have added all this other stuff:

You have so many third-party kernel modifications installed that you can't expect any kind of stability. I suggest you erase the boot volume and start over with just your user data and settings from a backup. If you can't live without all that crapware, reinstall it one item at a time, testing thoroughly at each step to make sure you haven't restored the problem.

The hatter, thanks for the info. It's a CyberPower UPS probably six years old. I'm not sure what the lifespan is on these UPSs, whether it's getting old or not. Also thanks for the info on how to effectively test the RAM, from subsequent posts it sounds like it's likely (hopefully) not the ram, but if it comes to that I'll know how to test it now, thank you.

Grant and Linc, yeah, I have a lot of crapware in my kernel. If that's the cause of my problem, I'm very releived!! I'm glad it's probably not a hardware problem.

I'd love to figure out how to remove the crapware, but I don't know if that's possible. I haven't manually rebuilt a kernel since I was using Gentoo, ages ago. If it's not possible, I'll resintall from scratch again. It's carried over from many years of OS X upgrades, so a fresh start would be great anyway, I'm sure. The only addons I'll keep are ExpanDrive (fantastic application that mounts FTP sites as locally mounted RW drives that you can access in the finder), and Little Snitch, you all know what that is I'm sure. I'll see if there's an alternative to Logitech's crapware, I really like being able to use all my special keyboard and mouse buttons but for a long time I've thought their drivers and software are very poorly designed. And then Audio Hijack Pro, hopefully it only needs to add one or two kernel modules (as far as I know soundflower has been obsolete a while now).

Can/does a Kernel panic shut down a computer that quickly? It was literally instantaneous, I didn't get that warning screen in all the different languages, it was just down in a flash.

Thank all for your help, all this crapware in my kerenel causing this problem seems extremely plausible and I'm releived it's probalby not my motherboard! My next step will probably be to install OS X from scratch.

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for their help. I reinstalled OS X, and so far it hasn't spontaneously rebooted, so I'm crossing my fingers but I think that may have solved the problem. I'm so releived it wasn't a hardware issue.
