If you haven't got a MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can install a 7200 rpm hard drive without any problem. You can find some hard drives in OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Apple installs 5400 rpm hard drives by default, but a 7200 rpm hard drive is valid on a MacBook and MacBook Pro. HGST hard drives have a good reputation
If it's the non-Retina you can install any 2.5" SATA drive of any RPM. Or even a 2.5" drive of no RPM at all (an SSD, which would be even faster).
My 2011 MBP has a 7200-spin Hitachi.
Finding 1 TB 7200 spin drives is the challenge, though. Most in that size range seem to be 5400-spin.
Never said they were non-existant ...
But that information is useful because I may at some time soon want to move my 500 GB internal to an external enclosure. Then my intenral drive is bumped to 1 TB.
But for now I use a lowly 500 GB internal ... 😝
If you wait I feel sure that 2Tb drives will be on their way soon 🙂
Heavens to murgatroid!
Thanks.
I have looked at the SSD drives and am not sure price warrants the benefits. Maybe a 258 G but I have a large iTunes library 88 G with plenty of cds I haven't added yet.
Steve359, greetings: I have been using a 1tb HGST 7200 rpm HDD for over a month. Runs silent.
Ciao.
I've seen the HGST drives for $125-$150 USD, and the Seagate ones for $225-$275 USD. I'm kicking myself for not buying one (or two) of the HGST ones at that price when I saw them...
Of course, I seem to feel the Seagate Momentus XT drives have a slightly better performance, so maybe I'm holding out for one of those in 1TB. 🙂
Not much longer though, Seagate have announced 1 Tb Momentus XT, no price yet, no sale date either.
Ther are not slightly faster, they are a lot faster (close to SSD speeds, faster than SSD under some circumstances according to tests)
Here's a video comparing the XT750 to a stock HDD and a stock SSD. (In an MBP)
Also your pricing is out, $145 will buy a Momentus 750XT, right now NewEgg are selling them at $129.

And they say you cannot teach an old dog new tricks ... 😝
Glad to hear about that ... it may come in handy soon.
