I want to purchase another 8gb of ram plus another 4gb of ram. This would bring my total ram with the factory 4gb of ram to 16gb of ram. Will this combination of ram chips run on my mid 2012 iMac? Any advice you give me would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the article. I don't have the new slim iMac (late 2012). I have the previous version. I imagine it was released in 2011 but sold up until the new ones were released.
If you download Mactracker it will tell you the max amount of RAM your model iMac can take.

I know I can install 16gb total and maybe a little more. I'm just wondering if I am able to add a single 8GB chip. Any ideas? I'll download that program later when I'm at my iMac.
Yes that will work just fine, although installing modules in pairs is always better.
Just make sure to buy the correct module(s) from a reputable supplier like OWC or Crucial.

More RAM is always better.

Just buy either the 16GB (2x8GB) kit or if that is out of your price range, the 8GB (2x4GB) kit.
