Can i leave the old sim in the phone while setting up; or do i need a new one?

I have given my IPhone4 to my partner, leaving the old sim card inside. The phone has been cleared of data and settings. When he goes to setup through his own cloud account, will the sim card function, or will it require a new sim, tied to his supplier?
