I can't get music on my iPod

I have iTunes 11, and I am having so many issues with it. The main one being that I cannot work out how to get music from iTunes onto my iPod.

I have set it up so I have the sidebar back, and my iPod is listed down the side. When I try to drag and drop songs into it, i can't. The album cover follows my mouse round, but I can't click on my iPod. The album cover then continues to follow my mouse around and it won't get off, no matter what I click, until what appears to be a completely random amount of time.

I also tried with the 'add to' thing, but the menu comes up, and I can see my iPod listed under divices, but I can't click it.

Can anybody help me?

The answer can be how to get back to iTunes 10. Because my mac won't let me do that either.
