How can I read a book on my computer?

I downloaded a book and when I tried to open it, it wouldn't work, I've tried to find info on it but can't really turn up much. If anyone knows a way for me to read it that would be appreciated - also I can't read it on an alteternate device as I don't own an Iphone or Ipad and my Ipod touch was stolen, my laptop is a mac though.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

If you mean an ibook then you won't be able to read most of them on a computer, you will need an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and the iBooks app. If it's a free ibook or the publisher is O'Reilly (and possibly one or two others) then you might be able to open via Calibre or Adobe Digital Editions, but most ibooks can't be read on a computer.
