Traceroute but no Ping

I'm having trouble with my MBA with internet connection to any application. Using the Network utlity it will run a Traceroute, but cannot Ping any address. The Netstat shows it is connected to a foreign address, but nothing gets passed to any of my applications. I've turned off the system firewalland remove other apps that might interfere, to no avail. I just found a Flash virus called Games.exe and am working to get rid of it. Any other ideas what might be causing this problem?

Some ISPs may block ping packets to their servers. What are you trying to ping? Can you ping other addresses or ping by name?

I've tried to Ping multiple sites, but none respond. The issue is that my MBA seems to be connected to the web but the apps (Skype, Safari, Chrome) still can't access it.

Are you connecting to the internet through a router or directly through a modem?

Open your System Preferences and click on Network. Do you see any active connections there with a green dot next to them?

I've connected via a USB dongle directly to the cellular network and via my wireless network at home. Other Mac devices work fine on with these connections, but not my MBA, though it used too a couple days ago. I can renew the domain lease and more importantly, it will run a traceroute to any given web address which seems to prove some level of internet connectivity.

Are you tracing by address or name? If you go to Safari and type in 74.125.225.35 does that get you to Google? You may have a DNS problem.

How are you connecting to the Internet?

Who is your ISP?

Give this a try. Open Network System Preferences, select your connection method (Ethernet or WiFi), then click on the Advanced button.

Click on the DNS tab.

Note what is listed in the DNS Servers: list. It should be a grayed out address of your router IP address.

If it is not, please post what it says.

If it is just your router address, then click the Add button ( + ) and enter these servers:

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Then, try to connect to the internet.

EDIT: sorry, I missed this before posting:

If that is the case, it is very likely that the MacBook Air is not getting the correct DNS servers passed to it from the router. Adding the OpenDNS servers as I described above should help.

Barney,

Yes, my wireless router address was listed. I went ahead and added the addresses you listed to no avail.

MplsEE08,

I searched the number address you listed in Chrome. The result was the same as the others. It says the page is not available, that it may be temporarliy down or move to a new address. "Error 10 (net::err_access_denied): unknown error."

Sounds like an issue with your ISP. I would contact their tech support and see what they say.

Are you using Intego Virus Barrier, Norton Firewall, or some form of net nanny?

I've turned off the system firewall. About a year ago I had BSecure (similar to NetNanny) installed, but that was on an old machine that I moved to this one. Besides, this MBA was was working fine 3 days ago. I do have a VPN (Hotspot Shield) installed, but it is currently turned off.

Have you tried using the "Assist Me" button in System Preferences/Network to run Diagnostics and Assistant?

Eric,

I've run the Diagnose function before, but I ran it again along with the Assist function. Both just seem to help with my connection to the router which isn't the issue.

Again, using Network Utility I can run a traceroute which to me seems to show that I have some level of internet coming to my MBA. The problem is that the internet doesn't get to my apps. It seems that something started blocking app access 3 days ago. I've thought back to what I've done on that computer then, but don't see anything but normal activity.
