Can anyone explain why - when using Speedtest.net on my iMac and Speedtest on iPad or iPhone - I get 1-1.5Mbps on my (wired connection) iMac and 6-7Mbps on my iPad/iPhone connected to the same router, and doing the test one after the other?

Try a different Cat5 cable first. We had an older eMac on our wired network (50MBps max) whose Speedtest and Speakeasy.net/speedtest results dropped to about 3.5MBps. I realized something was seriously wrong when I connected an old PowerBook with a much slower Tbase10 port to the network and it tested at 5MBps!
I replaced the cable from the eMac to the router and the eMac was once again getting 12-15MBps. Twisted pair cables can, I supposed, become "untwisted."

I even switched to a wi-fi connection on the iMac, and the situation was much the same. I'm becoming a little frustrated by this.
What else could be the reason?

Thanks Mike. Tried what you suggested. No difference. Still around 1Mbps on Mac compared to around 6Mbps on iPad/iphone.
Two things I would do next, first check to see if there's a firmware update for your router, then try changing the channel on the router. I've also read that some people have had luck going into network preferences and turning off IvP6

I tried what you suggested and it made no difference. I don't see why tinkering with the router would make a difference, though. I mean, if the iPhone and iPad are getting the correct speeds, why would it be the router at fault?
I really am becoming fed up with this, as it is my Mac that I use as my main internet device.
Anyone any other suggestions? Could it be a hardware issue on my Mac?
Do a search on these forums for "slow internet" and see how many people have had ipads, iphones and macs all on the same network and only the mac was slow. They changed the channel on their router and their problem was solved.
Of course it could be a hardware problem, but before I went that route I'd try to exhaust every other possibility.
Mike, I wasn't questioning your advice, simply wondering why changing channel would make a difference!
My guess is different types of airport cards in different devices. The one in your imac may not like the channel your router is on. I'm far from a networking expert, I was just relating the experience I've picked up through reading these boards.
Yep, I see that, but this not an Airport issue, my Mac is wired via ethernet to the router.
Maybe your imac and your router just don't like each other! What brand and model router are you using?
I've tried 3 different routers. Same result.
Have you tried adding OpenDNS numbers to your network settings? Sometimes seems to help with various connection problems:
I've been hoping one of the real "experts" would jump in at some time here. I've offered all of thenadvice that I feel comfortable offering, I don't just want to take stabs at things and give you bad advice. If someone else doen't help you my last suggestion would be to take your imac in to be looked at.
