Java update

Since downloading Mtn Lion OS X, several of my games won't load.

I've tried downloading the updated Java, and it now appears on my tool bar, but I can't get it to open/install/or whatever the **** you call it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I installed the most current version according to the Apple page (

Java for OS X 2013-002

by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_43)

Then it says:

On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled "Missing plug-in" to download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle

I haven't a clue as to what that means.

I went to system preferences and Java doesn't show up on it.... but it's in my dock.

That's because you don't have Java 7.

It means when you go to a web page that wants the Java plug-in there will be an area labeled "Missing plug-in"

The last Java update disabled Java plug-in and removed Java Preferences.app from your Utilities folder.

You can re-enable Java by following this support article

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559

Or, you can update to Oracle's Java 7 here

http://www.java.com/en/download/mac_download.jsp?locale=en

In Java 7 The preferences will be in your System Preferences.

Java 7_17 is the latest version of Java but since there are still vulnerabilities, it's best not to use it unless you really need it.
