I have upgraded my ipad2 to the latest ios. shortly after this message came up: "ipad is disabled, connect to itunes". I have never synced my ipad2 to itunes and don't have any backup. You can't bypass it, you will need to connect iPad to a computer's iTunes, and you may need to put it into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPad, which will remove all content from it.

You haven't been backing up to the cloud either, and/or keeping copies of important documents/files elsewhere e.g. on your email account, Dropbox etc ?

Unfortunately, you have little chance fo getting past recovery mode with out restoring and retrieving your data if you did not back it up.

You can try pressing both the home and power buttons until, hopefully you see the apple logo appear on the screen, then let go.

If that doesn't work, then try pressing just the power button to shut down the ipad. Let it sit for ahwile and then turn back on.

Try first sugesstion a few more times.
