how come garageband only plays some smf. and not all

when i import standard midi files to garageband and open them up some work ok and place all the instruments in there proper tracks. Yet some midi files will open up the same intrument for all tracks. the free midi's files seem to work most of the time, but iv'e noticed that the midi tracks i purchased from trantracks,hittrax,bandtrax, alot of the time, only open up in one instrument. does anybody have an answer to this problem. thank you johnnyray

It depends whether the midi files have programs (i.e. instruments) assigned to the tracks. Though GB doesn't have a set of General Midi instruments, it replaces those instruments with ones from its library.

I find the same problem. A Bandtrax file will open up in GB with Flute on every track, yet in Cakewalk Music Creator (on my PC) it doesn't do this.

I go through and reassign the tracks; this is a good way of sorting out what you don't need. It's slightly time-consuming and there might be an easier way.
