Monoprice 27" Monitor Mac Mini

The Set Up

Connected a new Monoprice 27" IPS LED CrystalPro Monitor WQHD (2560x1440) to a Mac Mini 5,2 with 8GB RAM an all software/firmware updates installed.

The monitor connects with a MiniDisplayport + USB to Dual Link DVI Adatpter.

Dual Link DVI is the only way to connect the Mini to the monitor.

The Problem

Monitor comes on and looks fine during start up — the gray screen with the dark gray Apple Logo appears, as does the spinning wheel. Then, at the point at which the Login Screen should appear, the monitor goes off and will not come back on.

Also, if I futz with the on/off button enough on the monitor, the monitor will come on and show me a good picture for a brief moment (2 seconds).

I have tried 2 different Adapters from 2 different companies, so I doublt that's it.

I have also tried t different cables from between the Adapter and the Monitor.

Before I return this monitor, is there a chance it's the Mac Mini? Anthing anyone can think of to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

I am having a similar issue with my Early 2011 Macbook Pro 15". I am running 10.8.3 and have all the updates. I bought the same 27" Monoprice LED last week and can't get it to work properly. With the Apple branded MDP to dual link DVI adapter, the monitor would turn on for about 4 seconds then turn off for about a second and repeat. I returned it thinking it might be the adapter, but had the same issue with the replacement. When I connect it to my work laptop (Thinkpad T430s) which also has a mini display port, the monitor works perfectly.

I bought a Kanex C30 mdp to dual link dvi adapter on amazon and just received it today. Just tried it out, but this adapter doesn't do any better. When i turn the monitor on, picture is displayed for about a second then standby light comes on and picture doesn't come back on. If I disconnect the cable from the mdp and plug it back in, does the same thing. Tried this adapter with the Thinkpad and monitor works perfectly.

The monitor works perfectly with my work computer (used it for a few hours) so I know it's not the monitor or adapter..

Update: Monoprice says it's because of an Apple update:

In regards to your inquiry, unfortunately at this time one of the updates from apple are having issues with new monitors. We are unable to pinpoint which update it was, but it appeared to happen somewhere at the start of the year. It's not necessarily that they are not incompatible, as they are experiencing this issue with other new monitors also (besides ours). To elaborate, it's not the adapters fault, the cable, or the monitor necessarily, but basically an issue with one of the updates. We would recommend contacting apple to see if there is any new revisions or solutions for this, but from our findings, we were unable to find a fix for it on our side...

So, as of now, I'm holding on to the monitor for a few more days and I'm going to try to contact Apple for a solution. I've tried two different adapters, and neither has worked, so I'm inclined to think that Monoprice is telling the truth. I'll keep you all up to date.

I set up bootcamp and installed Windows 7 on my macbook pro to see if the monitor would work and it works perfectly! This proves the monitor and the thunderbolt/mini displayport works fine with the adapter on my MBP. Looks like the hardware works fine and the issue is with with the Mac OS.

I swapped an extra hard drive I had into my MBP and installed Lion to test.. the monitor didn't work. If the issue is due to an update, it would have been released before Mountain Lion in my case.

I use a mini displayport to HDMI adapter when watching movies on my TV, and that works properly, so it looks like the problem may just be when mini displayport is converted to dual link dvi.

There is nothing else I can think of to test/resolve the mini displayport to dual link dvi issue.

I ordered a Dell U2713HM and will be receiving it in a coupe of days. It has a Displayport, so I will just need a mini displayport to displayport cable. Hopefully I don't have any issues with that connection.

It does have a dual link dvi connection as well. Although I don't plan to use dual link dvi with this, I will test the mini displayport to dual link dvi adapter with it before I return the adapter just to report back here and let you all know the result with that monitor.

Running into the same problems with my 27 inch crystalpro monitor. I have found one combination that works. I am not sure why though.

The combination that works for me is:

Mid-2010 Macbook Pro with the Nvidia GeForce 320M, 0S X 10.8.3 (12D78) with the Apple dual link dvi - minidisplayport adapter.

This setup doesn't work with the Monoprice adapter.

No other combination of:

2011 Macbook Air

Late 2012 Mac Mini

with either adapters work...

Go figure....

I have the Mid 2012 Mac Book Pro (retina) with Nvidia GeForce GT 650M running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. I am facing the same issue with the 27" IPS LED CrystalPro Monitor WQHD 2560x1440 monitor. I use the monoprice displayport to Dual-DVI adapter. The monitor when I connect displays the screen for a second or two then goes dark. Is apple going to release an update fixing the issue?

Hi, Sean.

I have Dell 30" display.

When I bought a mac mini 2012 a month ago I got the dual link DVI cable.

However to make the display work properly, the usb cable must be plugged into the mac or some other powered hub [which the dell has]

The USB cable provides power for the dual link to work.

I've since switched to display port, using a thunderbolt to display port adapter bought from Jaycay in Australia, where I live, it all works perfectly.

Regards,

Scorpii.

I am having the same issues as others, I get the apple logo on boot but then black screen. I have found if I plug a second HDMI monitor into my mac mini and have the Monoprice display on the thunderbolt port everything syncs up and both displays work perfect. If I unplug the HDMI display the monoprice display on the thunderbolt port blanks out. It will re-sync if I reconnect the HDMI display.......
