What OS are you using? If you are using Windows, check this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538. Also, if you are using Windows and you mention deleting iTunes, make sure you followed these instructions exactly when removing iTunes and reinstallating the new one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
