I was trying to install the OS X 10.8.3 update and a swoosh/steam escapting kind of sound and a puff of smoke or steam came out of my Macbook Pro!

Sounds like catastrophic failure of a circuit, involving electrical power. Possibly just a fan (just hope so), or maybe more.
Take it to Genius Bar and find out. But keep it turned off and unplugged from the wall until then.
Smoke coming out of an MBP could be indicative of a major fault developing. Make a Genius Bar appointment and take it to an Apple store or AASP for evaluation. You will not be charged and will be given an estimate for repairs, if necessary.

2 hours away from the nearest apple store, so I'll probably end up having to send it in. Sigh.

As to fans going bad ... a local store sells 7 in fans for tower systems for only $9. Some particular parts will never be of the highest quality due to their nature.
yes they did, but since I had just bought it I decided to return for a full refund and then got a new one. They wanted me to meet with a Genius Bar person to check the laptop etc, it was too much hassle for me so I just returned and got a new one.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to the Genius Bar tomorrow and see if they can replace in the shop, otherwise, I would return it as well. Just not sure if it 'd be more hassle to send the defective one back and answer more questions before getting money back.
I just received my MacBook Pro Retina yesterday. In the first day of use the laptop burst into smoke, literally. Smoke came out of the rear openings and the machine died.
The same happened to mine. Did you get a replacement? or they asked you a million questions and put you on long wait of repaire list?
