Overloaded Desktop in Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

I accidentally dropped a ton of files on my desktop and it has rendered Finder useless as it constantly crashes. I'm unable to move these files anywhere while logged into this name. I have a second login which I am able to access so I went into Terminal and logged into the account and attempted to move them.

mv ~/Desktop/* ~/Downloads/

-bash: /bin/mv: Argument list too long

After attempting to move them this was I received the "-bash: /bin/mv: Argument list too long" error.

I really need to keep some of the files and I'm not very comfortable in Terminal. Is there anyway around this? Thanks

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Run the following:

mv ~/Desktop ~/Desktop_old

mkdir ~/Desktop

Retrieve the files from the Desktop_old folder.
