Why do i get request time out when I run a software update to assist in installing a brother printer and when i choose install software through system preferences, there is a network error?

I have a mfc-j430w, which is supposedly supported.
Did you try downloading and installing the latest Borther drivers from Apple - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL894?

You could also try a reset of the printing system. This often helps with getting the supported driver located on Apple's servers and installed.
Habe downlaoded as suggested, but can not access when i go to add printer through system preferences.
in USE: it lists mfc-j430w but i can not change this.
