YouTube videos are all silent, on Firefox and Safari, but not Chrome

I'm baffled by this. It used to work fine and I'm not sure what changed but a month or so ago, suddenly all videos on YouTube are silent.

--The videos are silent on Safari and Firefox, but I can hear them on Chrome

--This only happens on my profile (the main profile)...my daughter's profile on this same MacBook doesn't have the problem

--Videos from Vimeo.com play just fine.

I've removed Flash and then updated my Flash player to the latest version, 11.6.602.180

I've tried deleting my YouTube.com cookie in Safari.

I can't figure out what would make videos silent in this specific set of circumstances but not others, so any help or suggestions you could provide would be appreciated.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

BTW I've looked similar threads on here, and have some additional info:

--Video on cnn.com works fine.

--I am not on the HTML5 trial according to this http://www.youtube.com/html5

--I have not tried Vertical Forest yet as I'm unsure if it will help http://www.verticalforest.com/youtube5-extension/

--I haven't tried resetting Safari yet. I have this problem in Firefox too.
