i have checked the box that allows time machine to appear in the menu bar, however it does not appear there.  It appears to be working properly otherwise.  should it show in the menu bar if its checked?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

    Yes, it should.

Try restarting the menu bar and see if it appears. To do that, open Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities) and paste this into the Terminal window:

    killall SystemUIServer

    hit 'return'.

The menu bar will disappear momentarily and then return. Is the Time Machine icon on it now?
