Quicktime Screen Recording Makes Green Screen Video

Here's what I do:


1. Open Quicktime Player (v10.2)

2. Select File->New Screen Recording

3. Click the record button

4. Click the screen one more time to record full screen

5. Record for 10-20 seconds then press stop


THE PROBLEM: The resulting video is a blank green screen. Nothing but green. Even after exporting it to my desktop, I open the file to view it and it is still green.


This is my first time using this utility, so perhaps I did something wrong? Any help is much appreciated!

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

I sat online with support and found it to be an error in my recorded permissions (back end communications between different applications). To fix it I did the following:


  1. Turn off computer
  2. Hold Command+R, and press the power button - but don't let go of Command+R
  3. Once your computer loads up, you can let go of Command+R
  4. Select "Repair Permissions" (or something similar, I can't remember the exact phrasing)
  5. Once they've been repaired, restart your computer and try again


If this doesn't work, then you'll want to call Apple Support

Run repair permissions - Its seems like a ML error where a lot of the audio/visual files in ~/System/Library are given owners when they should be set at 0.


I'd recommend doing it in the recovery partition (Command + R on Startup), unlike what smitchnstu advises. Doing it from the recovery partition is a lot more 'certain' than doing it from Disk Utility. After all, you'd much prefer another doctor do surgery on you, than you do surgury on yourself :-).


...That, and doing it in Disk Utlity did not fix the problem for me!

As I already said, use gfxCardStatus form gfx.io. Make sure you aren't running QuickTime or any other applicaitons that enable the external graphics chip. The dropdown menu will tell you if any are running, so you can qut them.


I use it all the time when I make screencasts.

I just want to add to this thread because I spent 2 hours trying to solve this on my Mac. For me it had nothing to do with updates or codecs, it was that I was remotely accessing my Mac through TeamViewer and my Mac's monitor was off. This prevented the screen from recording properly. Just turned on the monitor and then it worked fine - stupid thing, but if you don't know you can spend hours pulling your hair out.
