I am looking at getting a MacBook Pro from the UK Apple Store because I am living here at the moment. I use the US keyboard layout which is slightly different to the English one (several keys are in different places). When I tried ordering online there was no option to specify U.S. layout as an option. Anyone know if this can be done?
when i lived in london i ordered an ibook over the phone. this was about 2 years ago, but at that point it was not possible to get a u.s. keyboard layout. the u.k. layout was only slightly different and if you change your preferences from u.k. english to u.s. english, the keyboard replicates a u.s. keyboard. (£ becomes #, etc.).
I went into Regent St and had a look at the keyboard of the UK models. It's not as different as my PC laptop's is. For example the '@' is still on the 2 instead of over near the ENTER key. I still prefer the US key layout which has a larger ENTER and SHIFT buttons, but it's not a deal breaker.
They said at the store that they don't stock or order in models with US keyboard layouts.
If you can't order an US keyboard, check with your local Mac stores for a replacement part. I did this here in Switzerland and paid the price for the keyboard only. The replacement was done for free, which is a non-trivial procedure on the MBP.
There is another option. You could have friend/family order it and have it shipped to a US address and then have them ship it to you in the UK. You would avoid paying VAT too. So, somewhat illeagal, but gets the job done.
