Does the computer need to be turned on?

If I want to use home sharing with my other devices (such as iPad, or iPhone, or Apple TV), do I need to have my computer turned on?

It seems like such a hassle to keep my iMac turned on all the time. Especially if I want to use it at night before I go to bed.
