Why did Apple change Gmail to where I no longer get notification banners when I get email?

Recently Apple changed something causing banners to stop appearing when I receive gmail. Any idea why this was done and if there are any work arounds?

I have reread the news I saw on this and it looks like Google is the one who changed. I actually had my phone set up to send a badge to my closed screen on the iphone if I received an email from a vip. Other emails would just be a banner when I opened the phone. I realized my banners and badges had recently quit working for gmail. I could get notifications if I set gmail to fetch data every 15 minutes but the push notifications no longer worked. No more instant notifications. I added the gmail app and at this point, I think it is the best work around.

The only thing that changed was the Google stopped supporting Exchange for free Gmail accounts. If you already had your Gmail set up as an Exchange account (as I do) it will continue to work until such time as you change phones or remove the account. You won't then be able to add it back.

I still get banner alerts for VIP emails through Gmail. You also need to have "Show in Lock Screen" enabled.

However, the Gmail app is a simple solution.
