MacBook stopped charging after battery depletion

Hi there,

I drained the battery on my five-year-old MacBook one evening while working...to the point that it shut off on me. I then did not re-charge it immediately, nor did I start the computer up again for several weeks. I thought, "Eh, no big deal, I'll just plug it in and let it charge up again when I use it next time." Well, I just plugged her in and now the charging cord is lit up green as though the battery is completely charged, yet the battery indicator at the top left of the screen says (Not Charging.) Also, if I unplug the battery charging cable, the notebook shuts completely off.

Any suggestions or ideas, as I have NEVER had battery charge issues with this notebook before?

Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info(and then System Report if you are running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion), then select Power from the left hand column of the System Profiler. Copy and paste the Battery Information from the top of the page back here.

The Copndition: Replace Now says it all. Your battery has lasted long past the 300 cycles/3 years that's normal.

You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

frederic1943,

I read this post out of curiousity and checked my info.

You mentioned 300 cycles/3 years was the norm for battery life. I have an early 2008 13" Macbook with the original batter and my battery info says "Cycle count: 1339 Condition: Normal".

What exactly is a "cycle"?
