Is it OK to delete old iPhone & iPad manual backup files?

I had the impression that iTunes only stored the most recent backup (manual) for an iPhone or iPad. The manual iTunes backup process for my iPhone and iPad has stored MANY months of manual backups in my laptop's MobileSync backup folder. There are multiple files for each backup date (over 5,200 of them for my iPhone). My iPhone backup folder has over 1.2GB of files in it. My iPad folder has .5GB of files in it. So, I have two questions:

1. Why is iTunes creating more than ONE backup for my iPhone and iPad?

2. Is it OK to delete the ALL of the older backup files (prior to the most recent backup date)?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3, ITunes 11.0.2

There won't be any problem deleting all of the older backups.

As for the number of files in each backup and the amount of

space used is all dependent on your installed apps and how

they keep their data.

I checked, I only have a single (most recent) backup file

for my 4S. However I haven't done manual backups so

that might be why there are so many. There have been

a few occasions when I have done manual, however I

still only have the one folder.

BTW, when you open iTunes, how many backups are shown

in Preferences->Devices. If all those backups are shown there,

then that would probably be the best place to remove them.

If not, then just remove the older ones from the folder, but not

the most recent one indicated in iTunes.
