Why won't my iPhone connect to iTunes or iPhoto?

I plug in my iPhone and it doesn't show on itunes or Iphoto. It seems like my computer can't recognize my device, can someone please help me fix it? My computer is fully updated 10.7.5. ios x lion. I'm not sure if any of that helps, i dont know much about computers, thank you!
