8gb iPod touch with only 6.38gb capacity?

Is there a difference between my iPod being 8gb and it only having a Capacity of 6.38? Because in my mind i thought if its a *gb iPod then the capicity would be at 8 also. Please correct me if im wrong i just want to understand.
