My daughter is receiving iMessages from an unknown child.

My daughter is receiving iMessages from an unknown child. Our ISP cannot help us as the message was sent via iMessage. They need an IP address to identify the sender. Is there a way to find out identifying information from an iMessage? Meeting with the school today regarding the bullying and we suspect who it is, however, comcast is unable to prove it (in fact they were totally clueless about how iMessage works!). I'm wondering if i go through Apple to find out? I want to be able to explain to the police or the school how they can obtain the information (since I likely won't be given the information freely)

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.2

The message is from another iPod/iPad, that I was able to figure out. We can't turn off the iMessage as my husband and I, as well as other family can communicate with her via iMessage. I think I just need to call Apple since the email address must be associated wtih an Apple ID. I may leave that for the police/school to do. Thx 🙂

My daughter did not have this person in her contact list. That's why it came up as an email address. We are picky about who she adds. Once we find out for sure who it is, we can determine how they got my child's email address. Then deal with that person to tell them they shouldn't share that information without asking that person first. 🙂

Are you saying that the Message lists the email address of the sender? In that case you/school/police should contact the ISP to identify the account. Messages uses what is in the Contacts app for the sender to identify the send in a received Messages. If nothing is listed in Contacts for that email address, then just the email address i specified.

Yes the email address is listed. It is a comcast account. When I contacted the security department, they had no clue what was I was talking about with the iMessage. They wanted me to forward the email sent to my daughter to them. When I told them it was via a text-like, they said they don't give out phone numbers for text messages. I had to explain to them that the kids use the ipods like text messaging over wifi.

I was able to forward them a screen shot of the email address, but they said I could have spoofed it, so there was little they could do. They need the header information from an email to be able to track it. Since it was a "text message" they can't do anything to help me. It is frustrating that there are all these laws in place, yet the ISPs don't have a clue about today's technology.
