How can I fix my iMessages after they stopped functioning once I downloaded the update?

I have had my iPhone 4S for over a year and after downloading the newest updates my iMessages are no longer working. I am now abroad in Spain for the semester and I have been using iMessages for 2 months and do not have an international plan. After the update, I can no longer send messages to my friends and family. I have tried the step by step iMessage set up from the website with no luck. Please help me!

I had similar problem, and tried everything mentioned in the forums to fix it. Then, randomly, I tried to send an imessage from my iphone to my daughter (who ONLY has imessage through her email, and therefore NO cellular option to receive) and Bingo- a box popped up asking me to sign in to my Apple account. Then it worked fine for everyone. I don't know why it didn't think I was signed in, because I had signed in everywhere- but that was the fix.
