Q: Exporting album as library

Have been trying to export a smart album I have on a external hard disc drive to the desktop of my MBP.  Can export individual pictures as a "version" but not as a library.  Am using Aperture 3.4.3 and OS 10.8.3.  I get alll the appropriate pulldown menues to make a choice but when I choose the export button, nothing happens.  Suggestions appreciated.

Have you repaired your Aperture library lately? To launch into the Library First Aid Tools hold down the ⌥⌘ keys at the same time and double click the Aperture icon. Then select "Repair database" from the panel.

If repairing the library does not work, I'd trash the preferences - sometimes unresponsive buttons are caused by broken preferences:

To remove your Aperture User Preferences from your User Library:

The user library is hidden.  To reveal it, use the Finder's "Go" menu.

    • Click somewhere on your empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, then you'll see "Go" in the Finder's main menu bar.
    • Then hold down the options key ⌥ until "library" appears in the drop down menu. Click Library to open.  Remove the file

    your Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist.

Also remove the corresponding file in

    your Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.Aperture/Data/Library/Preferences/

    Regards

Thanks for the response.  I did the following:

    1. Repaired the library database

    2. Trashed the preferences from both the preferences folder and the containers.

    3. Closed Aperture and reopened it.

    Still can't export a library.

    3. Closed Aperture and reopened it.

    Just to be sure:

Removing the preferences is best be done after quitting Aperture and logging off and on again. At what stage did you quit Aperture?

Good Evening, I closed aperture and then did the moving of preferences to the trash from both folders. Restarted Aperture, tried to export and......nothing again.

The exporting has worked well in the past so I am pondering what is different.  I did download the Nik Software suite from Google.  I had read that others have been having crash issues with it and Aperture so I trashed it, no change there, either.  Other ideas?  Thanks for you help. ds

    Does exporting as library work,

    •      when you create a new, empty library (File > Switch to Library > Other/New) and import some test images?
    • when you do the same from a new/different user account?

Hi, opened a new blank library and imported a file from the desktop with some shots in it.  I then exported it to the desktop as a library.  That part worked.

Addressing your second point, not sure how you create a new/different account in Aperture.  ds

If you export as library a different group of images from the first library, a project or even a selection of images, not another smart album to the desktop does it work?

I can export a file from the Aperture sample library (the one that came with the program.  Don't ask why I still have it!)  That file is on the hard drive of the MBP.  Everything else I have been trying to export is on an external hard drive connected through a Firewire port.

I maybe didn't describe myself clearly.

In the library that started all this, the one that you are trying to export a smart album as a new library, if you try to export a project as a new library to your desktop what happens?

Hi Frank, I cannot export any project from this library.

So no library on the external disk allows you to export a project as new library to the Desktop?

But if you use a library on the internal disk you can export a project as a new library.

What is the type and format of the external drive and is it locally connected (USB ro FireWire) or networked?

Hi Frank, am using a Firewire 800 Iomega that I have used for many months.

I am now at my iMac which has the same software setup at the MBP.  I tried dumping the preferences as previously recommended.  No ability to export from the library on this computer either. (The library on the iMac is nearly identical to the library on the Iomega external hard drive).  I was leading you down the path that maybe the problem was with the external hard drive, but I am not so sure now.
