ipod classic not recognized by computer or itunes

when i plug my ipod in the screen says connected but it doesnt show up on my computer or in itunes. it shows up in the device manager and when i try to update the driver software it says

windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device

windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it
