i have this issue also.
my case, i dont live here - the phone (5) was purchaed from an apple store in London.
BUT i am travelling here (south america) for the next 6 months...
Bogota is my next major city that i am hopepful to get my issue resolved.
Its a corroded charging pin issue.
Only chrges when i hold the cord in a very certain way
(and yes, have tried different cords, cleaning terminals with pure alcohol etc - i am quite technical)
any guidance as to where to go would be most apprecieated!
thanks guys
K
reading around, it seems there is no apple stores anywhere in south america?!
cant bare to live without an iphone for the next 6 months here! (its so handy, maps etc - literally would change the whole travelling experinece)
i have repaired many iphone (4s) myself ordering parts from hong kong... perhaps i need to do that now for the 5? delivery logistics to hostels etc a headache though.
would far prefer to pay someone who has the parts and tools already while travelling
anyone?
Keiran, I've been looking for a place to repair my iPhone 4 and it seems that there is no any authorized place to do it here in Bogota, nevertheless a guy from an iShop told me that there is a good plate to repair Apple devices, this is the address if you want to check with them:
MAC TOOLS
Calle 90 No. 13-53
6223188 - 3212052508

The only place to get your iPhone legitametely serviced is where you bought it; in this case London. The warrany is NOT international and never has been. Even if there were Apple stores in Colombia, they would not touch your phone.
That is an unauthorized repair shop. They will void the warranty if they service it. And usually the phone ends up worse than it originally was.
The only AUTHORIZED place to service the phone in Bogota/Colombia is the carriers as has been said here before
Many thanks, particularly to Raul for local repair inside info :-)
Felipe, i apprecieate your angle, and sure the ideal world would be to take it to london, but im bot heading back there (im in the process of emmigrating from the UK to Australia, via 6 months travelling through South America) so need to be realistic here. Im ok to void the warranty. As mentioned im comportable repairing these myself, ive torn down the iphone4 completley myself many times to replace failed components. So if it comes to that i can do it for my 5 now too (but when i have a relaible place to send the parts!). I just need a reliable charging system, whilst on the road. Ie now.
Raul, ill contact that shop via email now, my girlfriend speaks spanish and with the help of google translate too we should be ok. Thanks again guys.
Keiran.
Just sent this. Fingers crossed.
Spanish at top, english at the bottom.
Raul, hopefully it makes sense?!

Keiran.

Hello, ive been recommended your repair shop from this forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4936601?answerId=23423753022#23423753022&ac_cid=tw123456#23423753
My iphone5 charging has become unreliable.
I have to hold my charge lead in a * very * specific way (bend it slightly) to get it to charge.
This happened after a week in Tayrona beach so i suspect the contacts have become corroded.
Interestingly, i have tried another (new) lead, and with that it wont charge at all! So i suspect that BOTH the contacts on my cable AND the iPhone5 electrical pins are damaged (perhaps some metal from the electrical contacts got ripped off when i removed the cable around the salt air) so now, the only way i can charge it is via that exact (probably damaged) cable.... and even this system does not work very well as i have to hold that cable and bend it in a certain way.
So i think i need this part replaced?

I would usually do this repair myself, but travelling through south america for 6 months i do not have a reliable address to post the part to. I also don't have my delicate electronic tools with me.
So i am asking you!
Ill be in Bogotá this friday afternoon and can visit your shop, but i will need to collect it no later than monday as we leave Bogotá again on this day headed to Ecuador.
Do you have this part in stock? If so, can you repair it quickly for me? How much will you charge?
Looking forward to your reply.
Keiran.
regards,
Keiran
All support for the iPhone in Colombia is provided by the cell carrier that sold the iPhone. Contact your carrier - Comcel, Movistar or Tigo - as appropriate.
Regards.
There is no legitimate way to get iPhone parts. If that shop has them they will likely be knock-offs. Could be that your phone ends up worse than it is now. Good luck.
