Q: What can I do with Power PC G4 iBook - anyone know anywhere to get rid of it? In great condition, but had to upgrade to Intel processor.

I have a working Power PC G4 iBook - OS 10.4.11 from early 2005.  Had to upgrade to a MacBook Pro with an Intel Processor when the Power PC processor wouldn't let me negotiate the web anymore :-(  Worked fine except for that.  Is it good for anything with the ******** processor or do I just junk it?  Seems sad as it works fine and is in great condition.  How do I dispose of it? or is there somewhere that can make use of it? Any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

Put it up on a site such as Amazon or eBay or take it to a store which sells secondhand Macs.

Be a good citizen and donate it! Some poor child might get it and have the computer they have been dreaming of for years!

It's too old to sell and as I stated, it doesn't work for web browsing anymore.  You can still load CDs for gaming and word processing, so maybe good as a second computer for a child who has uses not involving web browsing.  I'd love to give it away to some deserving (or undeserving, for that matter) person, but do you know of any organization that will take old computers??? All that I've contacted so far are really fussy about what they will take for free and websites like Gazelle don't even list Macs this old.  So far none of your advice has been helpful or realistic :-(

Ok first, have you tried goodwill? They will usually take anything! Or try a thrift store. Second, bad attitude concerning the poor. Just becuase some people are poor due to there own mistakes does not make them less deserving. Not trying to start a problem, but shame...

Most people sell them on eBay. There are a lot of people who buy old iBooks for collections or parts.

I've often brought iBook's on ebay for there parts. These iBook can be highly collectable and in excellent condition maybe very welcomed to someone's collection. If not then there is always Freecycle. There maybe a  freecycle in your country, which allows you to offer it for free to a good home.

Well, Ken, you totally misunderstood my comment - first of all, you misinterpreted "deserving" to mean poor, which is not what I meant by that word. I simply meant that I would be happy to give the Mac to anyone, whether they were "deserving" (dictionary says: worthy,  merited, nothing about being poor!) or not.  I don't mind being chastised when I 'deserve' it, but I suspect your misinterpretation says more about you than about me.  I find it odd that you would see it that way (?) I am worthy and deserving and have in the past been rather poor, one having nothing to do with the other :-)

About your comment relating to my computer, I have indeed tried local thrift shops and a local organization's Abundance Day (where they give stuff away for free) and none of these places take old computers anymore - some won't take any old electronics at all.  But thank you for your input :-)

Thank you, Knucklesmac, for your suggestions.  I actually use our local Freecycle all the time.  I haven't really done much with eBay - maybe I can get my daughter to do it for me as she has more experience and an account with eBay.  I never thought of collectors. I might try Craig's List in the meantime, though our Craig's List is not as active as one in a larger city, and I've not had much luck there in the past. If that gets no action, I will indeed try a post on Freecycle. Your comment was most helpful !

I suggest you give it to a school and tell them to give it to a kid they know who could use it I know a few in my class who could use it!

Also, you can download firefox on a thumb drive and install it on the old iBook and this should make MOST websites load on the mac! I hope this helps you!

Also, can we try NOT to fight on the forums?

Are you serious? I'll send you my address.

    I'll even pay the shipping.

Yes, I love all flavors of Mac.

If you need to get 'rid' of it, I promise it will be in good hands.

    Long live the Mac.

Jim 361036 - I don't want to post personal information, so how would we do this?  I would be more than happy to box it up and send it to you if it can be arranged.  Would you want the "Missing Manual Mac OSX Tiger Edition" also?

P.S. to Jim - I don't mind revealing that I live in north east Pennsylvania, so postage woud be from there to whereever you are, FedEx or post office, which ever is least expensive.
