Can I stream a movie from iPhone 5 to iPad with no wifi

I am in the Air Force and I do a lot of traveling. I recently purchased a 16 gig iPad mini and also have a 64 gig iPhone 5. Being that my iPhone has more space, I would rather put a few movies on my iPhone and try to stream them to my iPad for the bigger display while I am flying (I am not the pilot). Is this possible by either Bluetooth or a third party app? Or am I just going to have to limit how much data I use up on my iPad? I always put my phone in airplane mode while in the air to listen to music and kill some time while saving battery. I also have a Mac book pro but hate lugging it around on the shorter trips. So again, my question is,

Can I stream a movie from my iPhone 5 to my iPad mini by any means while flying in an aircraft and no wifi?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Apple coded the ability to stream iTunes purchased TV/Movie content out of iOS sometime at some version of iOS 8.

I discovered this feature omission in iOS 9 when I started inquiring about this.

This was an undocumented and workaround feature, from iOS 5 to the last iOS 7 update, to be able to stream iTunes purchased movie/TV content remotely from an external storage device, but Apple closed down, coded out this ability/workaround since, and it seems that Apple is not going to restore this ability anytime soon!

There is no way to do this any longer!

There is NOTHING you can do to get this to work!

This ability is gone!

Plus, with mobile, portable, WiFi hard drives and mobile flash drives, you are forced to use a drive maker's app to access these drives and the drive app is not capable of wirelessly streaming purchased iTunes TV/ Movie content as Apple's own DRMs have been preventing this, too!

The remote streaming ability was accessed through a workaround that allowed streaming of purchased iTunes movie/TV content though the iOS Safari web browser.

Apple closed up, coded out this workaround out of Safari during an early iOS 8 update, forever preventing protected, BUT PURCHASED, iTunes movie/TV from ever being streamed from a remote storage device.

Android devices do not have this limitation to be able to stream the same iTunes purchased content to their devices from a wireless WiFi remote storage device.

The only thing you can do is transfer movies from the drive to your iPad to watch the movies off of your iPad, now!

The wireless drive is just a storage vessel, now and not an external streaming device.

Yes,

You can stream your own ripped movies from these wireless drives using the wireless drive maker's own app found in the iOS App Store.

I have resorted to stop purchasing any more iTunes movie/TV content and going back to purchasing physical muliti format discs of movies/tv show and creating my own digital copies of DVDs that I can use with both my Seagate Wireless portable drives and wireless and lightning connected mobile, portable USB flash memory drives.

I can now directly stream all of my movie/TV content, once again, from external storage devices.

You CAN stream downloaded YouTube content from remote wireless drives to your iPad, also.

I still own the first generation iPad that still has iOS 5.1.1 that still has this capability. So, I can still stream movies from my Seagate Wireless hard drive to my 2010 iPad 1, but this is my only iPad that still can do this.

If you want Apple to restore this external streaming workaround feature/ability, send feedback here.

Hey. So I like the idea you have listed here. I have a few follow up questions. I just like to know how this works before I start buying stuff.

1) Do you need some sort of app to play those movies? They kind of hinted you did on their website.

2) Does the movie being in iTunes matter? So when I plug it into my computer to download the movies to play later does it matter if i download them from iTunes or should i instead download them as "generic" MP4 files.

3) When I go to play from the seagate drive can it play in ITunes itself. Or do i need to download an additional "movie playing" software on my iPad/phone?

Thanks for the help and answeres to my questions 🙂

That's a downer. Would be nice. By the way, I work over at the 911th in Moon at Pittsburgh airport. So, thank you neighbor. We just received iPads also at work for our technical data for working on the airplanes. They limit what we can do but they always come to me on how to use them. I have a trip on Monday for 2 weeks and will be flying and sitting around a lot waiting for them to land (I'm the aircraft mechanic), so we will be sitting in a truck in the desert for hours and need entertainment. I guess I will bring the laptop and hard drive with me also.

I am not totally sure that this app will work with large videos, but it will transfer photos over Bluetooth from an iDevice to another iDevice and it does state that it will transfer videos as well. Take a look at it.

BTW ...l appreciate everything that you guys in the military are doing for us. You are getting a new joint facility over there in Moon aren't you?

Thanks, I tried that app before posting on here. It does not transfer video. We can put remote control vehicles on Mars but we can't stream purchased movies from one of our devices to another or ours? Lol.

Thanks. The Navy came in and a new Commisarry is being built across business 376 off university.

Thanks for your help. I am always messing with these things and trying to find new ways to use them. I debated on Jailbreaking due to some features that I really could used and need but obviously that is not an option any longer.

I was doing some research and found that Seagate makes a wireless hard drive that is also portable. It's the Seagate Wireless Plus. It is a 1tb and streams movies to any mobile device without cables and Internet. They claim it works with Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod, android, kindle, Windows and anything else mainstream. I picked one up at Best Buy and so far it work great. I'm going to test out how well it works while flying and during the trip. It has its own rechargeable batter which is supposed to last approx 10 hours. Not bad for the money!!! If you get a chance and decide to check it out, let me know what you think!

Hi Crew Chief 130.

I know of a Seagate GoFlex Satellite Drive and I apologize for not mentioning it, but I thought that the goal was to carry as little as possible with you on these trips. The drive creates its own ad hoc network for streaming to your devices but you cannot connect to the Internet with it.

My bad, I should have suggested it. Kingston makes a drive like that too. I think there are a couple of others as well. Anyway, I'm glad that you discovered it and that it is working out for you.

A lower tech way to carry movies with you requires SD cards and time, but If you put mp4 files on a SD card you can use the camera connection kit to import those into the iPad. You can then watch and delete.

There is a catch in that you have to follow a very stict naming convention and import then watch, but could be another way to have multiple movie files with potentially less bulk than the hard drive (Although, while the goflex is more expensive, it may be easier to work with than the 'make it work' aspect of the SD cards.)

Demo, no worries. The drive is not much bigger than the phone so it's still compact enough that I can keep it in my bag on trips. Being that we fly our own aircraft and not commercial, our bags are with us. And while at work we have so much gear we need that we all use back packs. Makes our jobs and life much easier.

Sky, I had seen that also and seems way to advanced and time consuming but is an option if this thing doesn't work.

Thanks guys for your help!
