Q: Early 2011 Macbook Pro 15' - Logic Board Failure

Hey guys, first post on this website, so go easy on me!

About two weeks ago, my Early 2011 15' Macbook Pro's logic board failed on me. It was only nine months out of warranty, and costed me around $2400 at the time of purchase (high end 15' model).

I went into the Apple store to diagnosis it. They did a hardware test, and even though the logic board appeared to be fine on all of the tests they did, the guy there said that he's 100% sure that it was.

$630 later, I have a new logic board. I feel like I've been cheated by Apple, and a $2400 computer shouldn't need a $600 repair not even two years later. All anybody from Apple can say is 'Should have got Apple Care', which I find iggnorant.

Has ANYBODY else had this problem on their Macbook's around this year? Also, what would the best way to try and get compensated for this be? I have tried Customer Relations once, but he didn't seem to budge.. Just kept telling me that it was 'bad luck' and there is nothing he can do. Bad luck doesn't break an expensive machine like this so quickly.

Cheers

I had the same thing happen.  My logic board was replaced in Sept 2013, and then just a week ago, my laptop would no longer boot up. Instead, I would just get the grey screen of death. Brought it in to the genius bar... They want $540 to replace the logic board... After just having it done last year! Why would I spend money to fix something that has a good chance of breaking down again after a year?

It is such a common problem with this generation of laptop. I really wish Apple would address this issue. We have all invested a lot of money into these machines, and they really should have a longer life span than just 3 years. Honestly, I would love to get another MBP, as they are great machines... But the cost really isn't worth it for such a short lifespan.

My 2011 macbook pro had the gpu failure last year. I paid to replace the motherboard, it lasted 9 months and has now failed again. My backup macbook pro, similar model, shows signs that it will fail next.

I just called apple and escalated the issue as high as they would let me. I mentioned the class action suit and asked what could be done. Apple said the best they could offer was to sell me another full motherboard replacement at full cost, or in other words, nothing.

I would suggest that nobody pay to fix your macbook pro or try to bake it and repair it yourself. We will need to wait until the class action suit passes and then get apple to offer fair compensation for their failed manufacturing issue.

Another faulty logic board for our 2011 MBP, too. It ***** to shell out $300 to fix a $2000 machine, but what ***** worse is being told that it would be a 3-5 day turnaround, including overnight shipping. We are now on day 8 and nothing has been completed. We are a loyal Apple household, but this has really left a bad taste in our mouths. No email updates, no phone call to let us know it is running later than expected, no re-evaluated ETA. We are both in school and this is our only computer.

I think early 2011 15" logic boards go out due to some firmware issue with Thunderbolt. It's something from intel... I know also they have issues with the type of vid card i them. If you have an intel vid card your fine, but AMD it's known to fry it.

I too own a 2011 make macbookpro 15" which suffered a logic board failure recently. The replacement cost of the logic board is 30% of the price i paid to purchase it. I have always been an apple loyalist. Even after my first iMac had an mother board failure i never stopped believing in apple but now that my macbook has also suffered the same fate i have lost all hopes with apple products. Better are other brand laptops which last thrice an apple product and costs half of the apple counter part.

I'd like to support all action suits and join as many threads so that apple is forced to come up with a solution.

let me know what all treads or posts are open regarding this.

I am now on my 3rd logic board in 4 months, the 1st one cost me $1120 to replace & the other 2 replaced under warranty. To call these support center's Genius Bars is a gross misuse of the word. Anyone with half a brain would realise that there is something else causing this problem but Apple just keep replacing the boards. When I finally give up on this overpriced piece of junk, it certainly won't be replaced by another Mac.

Just took my mac in for GPU logic board failure to the Genius Bar as well. Luckily it is 3 weeks until my Apple Care is out so everything is covered. I also had the same problem on my 2006 MBP three years in as well. It seems like these third party vendors just cannot get things done right.

Does this never end?  My 2011 MacPro is starting up again.  This would be the 4th logic board if I replaced it.  I will not replace it.  I'll ditch the laptop in favor of a stationary Mac......and then hope some class action lawsuit comes to my aid.  The first three didn't cost me anything but I'm 2 months out of the 90 day warranty now.

Same laptop, same GPU/LB issues. Bought the 2011 MBP as my first Apple product and loved it until 2 months ago... now I've got a $2000 paperweight unless I want to go through all the hassle and repair cost lamented in the posts here, blogs and bulletin boards all over the internet. C'mon Apple, seriously?

Previous laptop was a cheap HP which, incidentally, lasted 2 years longer than my mac.  So much for the fabulous, dependable product and customer service I heard so much about.  My next 'disposable' laptop with be another cheapo, certainly not another mac unless by some miracle Apple makes this right.

What I meant to say was that Apple markets themselves as a high quality, new and best tech, better than all the rest and then they do this to those of us with these lemon 2011 MBP's!   It's very hypocritical and actually flies in the face of who and what they say they are.  Old guard/new guard?  I wonder what Steve would have said about this.  Maybe they don't care since they are so big...we are expendable if we ditch Apple and go with a PC.  Or we're so addicted to Apple that we'll suck it up and rebuy anyway.

You can still walk into an Apple store and find that no one will admit there is a logic board problem.  They'll blame a lot of other things likes the drive.  Seriously?  After all this time and they don't know about it?  They do.

The other thing that irks me is that my laptop has been in for repair twice now and you would think that knowing the problem instead of just slapping in a refurb part they would just resolver the darn chip.  I am going to research recalling and maybe go that route.

I called Apple.  The guy on the phone had nothing to say except that he "felt my pain".  The nerve....So I called the Apple store.  No info...must bring it in and send it off to be able to ascertain what it would cost for the 4th logic board.  Then they would report back to me and I would have to decide while they had my laptop there.  Not happy with that idea.  What really galls me is the constant denial on all fronts that there is a problem or that they've even heard of a problem.  How stupid do they think we are?  The geek at the Apple store said he had seen hundreds of laptops come in for repairs of all sorts but NEVER a logic board issue.  Apple has totally lost my trust.

I have to agree. After numerous calls to Apple Support I am tired of their “heartfelt sympathy”. It looks like Apple’s solution is a roomful of telephone workers who openly commiserate with their victims. Weird customer service model.

I have more or less realized this will be my last Apple product, after 20 years of being an evangelist.
