Q: Early 2011 Macbook Pro 15' - Logic Board Failure

Hey guys, first post on this website, so go easy on me!

About two weeks ago, my Early 2011 15' Macbook Pro's logic board failed on me. It was only nine months out of warranty, and costed me around $2400 at the time of purchase (high end 15' model).

I went into the Apple store to diagnosis it. They did a hardware test, and even though the logic board appeared to be fine on all of the tests they did, the guy there said that he's 100% sure that it was.

$630 later, I have a new logic board. I feel like I've been cheated by Apple, and a $2400 computer shouldn't need a $600 repair not even two years later. All anybody from Apple can say is 'Should have got Apple Care', which I find iggnorant.

Has ANYBODY else had this problem on their Macbook's around this year? Also, what would the best way to try and get compensated for this be? I have tried Customer Relations once, but he didn't seem to budge.. Just kept telling me that it was 'bad luck' and there is nothing he can do. Bad luck doesn't break an expensive machine like this so quickly.

Cheers

Had the MBP "refreshed" at a local place, failed after one day, then had the  reballing done, MBP failed after a couple of days, Had the GPU chip set replaced? Working right now. Total cost of $400 Canadian for everything. Hopefully the machine will last a while. My old PC died on me after my MBP died the first time, but I replaced the hard drive so I have an emergency back up to my MBP. Kind of ***** because I have grown to like OS over windows, but it's not worth it if such an expensive computer can't last more than 3 1/2 years. I even checked out the Windows store today and saw some nice gadgets. Anyway, at least my iPhone and iPad have held up well over the years.

Ditto. My 2011 Early Macbook Pro needed the logic board replaced as well about a month and a half ago. However, I'm already seeing signs that something's failing again. Glitchy display artifacts appearing for a second then disappearing. When I wake up the computer, the display is a chaotic mess, and I have to just assume I'm entering the password in the correct area. After signing on, it seems fine. What is going on Apple? And why not take care of the problem the right way?

I Have 3 13" 2010 MacBook pros with no video. Along with two unsupported Mac pros less than 6 years old and two iMacs with vertical bars on the display. I have looked up all the issues such as the screen issues on the imacs and now this logic board issue and tons of discussion of people having the issues and a solid ignoring shun from apple. I'm pretty much at my limit.

I was having problems while it was in warranty. They said it was all kinds of things. Today (computer is just over two years old) I find out it is logic board. I am not computer hardware literate but it ****** me off that I have been jerked around. Apple is supposed to be better than everybody else, God knows they cost more, the least they can do is back up their product when there is an obvious problem.

I Really relate to you being mad!!! I thought when you pay twice the price, you get twice the computer. They may as well be ATT! I have a $2400 paperweight and I reviewed other posts in forum to see if mine was just bad luck but there are Many other people with newer MacBooks, and IMacs that have logic board failures or graphics Which is just as bad. I will Not Buy Another Mac Computer! I held loyal to Mac and the iPhone. After the miserable customer relations and Apple Care Centers saying my computer wasn't worth the cost of repair, I'll take my chances with Asus, windows, and a good anti-virus. That means my iPhone will an aquarium decoration!

I Too have this problem. As a professional photographer it's extremely frustrating dealing with this problem two times in the life of this computer. the first time I was able to this fixed under warranty. Now, nearly 200 days later, it's happening again. I can't even scroll through low res gopro jpegs without my computer failing.

Now I find out Apple is getting ready for a huge cash handout to stockholders:

Robbing from the poor and giving to the rich. What a swindle.

I replace Logic Board again, for second time after 90 days, and thanks they did not charged me this time.

Yes every computer can fail eventually, but to fail after 90 days its something wrong with the mechanism , not just plain old and over worked machine.

If APPLE ignores its customers, eventually, in the computer world, someone will come with something better, I sow it with AST computer, even IBM, even DELL is not what it was before.

In any case, APPLE, you read these notes, listen to your customers and do a recall / replacement.

    Hi There,

Yesterday ive brought my Late 2011 MBP 15' again to my local Apple Seller because my logic board was broken (the second time now). I was quite lucky because it was whilst the last day of my warranty. But the technican in the store told me that in the moment they discuss how to solve this problem in Cupertino and they are absolute aware of it. He also said that there should be an official answer within the nex 3 Months or so.

I hope this gives some People hope.

Unfortunately I get to join the hoard of 2011 MBP GPU failures.

Played an OpenGL game for a bit the other day. Was rewarded by machine screen going blank. Now the machine will not power on reliably even when cold. Running YouTube videos or games results in freeze/garbage on screen/or blank screen now.

    *sigh*

I have been forcing the machine onto the integrated graphics chip in order to keep it going for light duties.

This has really turned me off the Apple brand, and I doubt that I will be paying for a replacement.

    Late 2011 15-inch Macbook Pro.

Upgraded to Yosemite a month ago and problems started within days.  I blamed them on Yosemite and It went downhill from there with several different things failing.  I took it to an authorized Apple dealer and at first they couldn't find anything wrong with it until I returned it just two hours after picking it up.  Apple diagnostics confirmed it needed a new logic board.  I have the extended warranty (runs out next month) so didn't have to pay for the the repair.

I'll never buy another Apple product without the extended warranty but don't feel that I should have to do that considering how much new Apple products cost.

If anyone is not aware, there was a lawsuit against APPLE for this issue of failed Logic Board, 2011 Mac Pro 15 inch.

The lawsuit was rejected by the court at the moment.

Neither to say, Apple should take responsibility of this issue.

APPLE store Genius Bar told me its a common problem for laptops than desktops, well, my laptop is sitting on my desk for the last 3 years in a protected / A/C environment, never damaged, etc.

Its clearly a malfunction of components, as they do work for a while, until they failed, after 1.5, 2, 3, years depend on the usage.

In today business world, companies disrespect their clients, as there is no mutual long term relationships, but thanks this machine don't explode in our face like TAKATA Airbags, that even then the manufacture decline responsibility. Well, did you heard people stop buying Honda, and checking what manufacture Airbag is on cars? I never heard someone complaining for replacing their old car, but they do complain about a malfunction one, and we are no different.

I had the exact same thing happen upon installing Yosemite. At first, it started as a green hue over my screen with static to it like an old tube style tv with a rabbit ear antenna. It popped in and out so I thought maybe the download got corrupt. I re downloaded but it came back. Then my screen started freezing and my pointer would not move and I had to force shutdown. It also came and went. Then, it got to where I was getting blank white patches patch worked close to each of the 4 corners and they were flashing bright white as if it were a lightning storm. AGAIN, forced to shutdown. After that a few times, my loading bar wouldn't go up past 1/3 before shutting itself off saying it encountered a problem. Really! all of this started and was all over within. Month. I posted warnings in MacForums (tried) a half dozen times that Yosemite was a POISON PILL that fried logic boards and a was sent emails from people at Mac saying I would loose my forum privileges if I didn't cease to stop "RANTS" ! The forum is for people to pool information and search for solutions. I was most sincerely trying to help people avoid a $2000. Loss like I did! Mac help desk and tech support on the phone all told me the same thing. My computer wasn't worth the cost of the repair!
