It needs to be a MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).

Aug 8, 2013 2:48 PM in response to FireTimby anth2013,You need to put system perferences.plist to the trash......go to find finder... top menu click go then click go to folder type this words in box exactly ~/libarary/perferences click go, find the lists say com.apple.systemperferences.plist drag this to the trash then u click restart in apple icon ,once this done u do ur settings in ur system perferences and this should bring back ur missing option which i believe in display show mirroring options in the menu bar when avail. ..... all the best

try to note this?
1. both are connected through the same wifi?
2. you´ve entered the Apple TV with the same Home Sharing (Apple ID) active?
* I mean, both Mac and Apple TV must be configured with the same Apple ID, and Home Sharing should be turned on in your iTunes.
