It would be on a copy of the reciept if purchased directly from apple and it would also be on the origional box.

Well, you should find the serial number when you find your computer. But you will find it on the box in which it came and on your receipt. The vendor may have it as well.
Assuming you registered your Mac you can use My Support Profile to find a list of serial numbers for items purchased or registered with your Apple ID.
