Surely there must be a short cut key to delete a file rather than right clicking the mouse then selecting move to trash then clicking.

Click on the file icon. Then, press command+delete. This delete key is directly below the eject key on Apple aluminum keyboards. If you are using a PC keyboard, then the combination of alt+backspace may do the job.

Apple OS X Keyboard Shortcuts (HT1343). There are links there to creating your own shortcuts, too, which can help if some particular chord is difficult for you.

The keys and keyswitches on some of the PC keyboards I've worked with have been atrocious. The Apple keyboards are decent. Going to keyboards with the better-grade Cherry keyswitches can sometimes help, too. There are various PC and Mac keyboards around with those. There are also ergonomic keyboards which can help.
