Converting Appleworks 6.2.3 documents created on an iMac OS 9.0.4. to Pages on my new MacBook Pro OS 10.8.3.

I have many Appleworks 6.2.3 documents created on an iMac OS 9.0.4. I want to convert these files to Pages on my new MacBook Pro OS 10.8.3. so I can share the documents with newer computers that use Microsoft Word. How do I do this? Pages can't read my Appleworks documents. When I try to open the older document with Pages, the window says, "The document “Name” couldn’t be opened." These older documents show up on my new computer as Unix Executable Files. Any help would be appreciated.

This is brilliant! Thank you so much! I never would have imagined that this would work, but it does. I had about given up trying to find a file converter that could do this, but TextEdit comes through again. Apple ought to publicize this.

AppleWorks 6 or higher spread sheets can be opened by Numbers 09, while the word processing ones, can be opened by Pages 09. If the documents were created by an earlier version of AppleWorks, you would need to open them on a computer that still has AppleWorks on it. Then you can copy the data to another format while on the other computer.

- right click on the file / open with - select Pages. Once it is opened via Pages - file / save. This will create a .pages version of the document.

Your AppleWorks files should have a file extension of .cwk.

Here are some web sites that provide information about AppleWorks documents and their compatibility

My goal is to make hundreds of .cwk documents (created by Appleworks 6.2.3 on an iMac OS 9.0.4) readable and usuable on Microsoft Word on a new computer (windows os). Originally, I wanted to use my MacBook Pro as a go between via Pages. But, I found that I could "save as" the Appleworks documents as .rft (without using my macbook), which was readable and usuable on Word (on the new computer using windows). So, now I want to "save as" all of my appleworks documents with the extension .rtf so they can all be used by Word, and do this conversion as a batch or all at once (so I do not need to "save as" the documents one by one). Any help? Thanks.

Thanks for pointing out that Snow Leopard Server is still for sale by phone. I went and got a copy today.

One note, though. I'm pretty sure that running Snow Leopard Server in Parallels works only if the host computer is old enough to run Snow Leopard natively. [1] Since the OP's Mac came with Mt. Lion on it, it cannot run Snow Leopard Server, even under emulation.

I'm sure you already know this; I'm posting it for others that stumble on this thread.

[1] I vaguely remember this from when Lion came out. The sales rep told me as much before he would sell me the software (which was nice). I have not yet checked to be sure on my MBP mid 2012, which cannot run Snow Leopard in any form.

This is incorrect information.

The whole point of running Snow Leopard Server in Parallels is to regain access to Rosetta on modern day Macs that cannot natively boot Snow Leopard.

For example, here is Leopard running in Parallels in Lion on my 2011 Mac Mini:

The Apple sales rep was possibly confusing the fact that you wanted to run Snow Leopard Server natively; which of course would require a Mac that could boot Snow Leopard. In my experiences of many times calling to purchase SLS, the sales rep knows less about the product than I do...

I realized that my original statement was broader than I intended it to be; and hence potentially demeaned those hard working telephone sales reps much more than I intended, after the 15 minute period to edit my post had expired.

What I meant to say is that I know much more about the use of Snow Leopard Server for my purposes than does the Sales Rep:

Use of Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels so as to regain access to Rosetta in Lion or Mt. Lion to run PowerPC apps.

They probably know much more about its Server functionality as I do; because I almost completely ignore these capabilities and remove their apps from the Dock, so as to not be confused by them.

I can hear you say that none of the usual ideas for converting your AppleWorks files into Pages. What now? Have a go at this. Works for me!!!

If like moi, you get a message saying:

The document was created with an unsupported version of AppleWorks.

Don't panic!

I found this the easiest thing to do and it really does work!!!

Click on appleworks folder but do not open just yet!

You should see a folder with options Top one will say Open but ignore this one

Next one down should say: Open with

Go to the bottom option: Finder logo should be jumping up and down!

Click on finder: Finder should open up

IGNORE: IWorks and pages: Go straight down Text Edit

Click: Open

Your file will open up in: Text Edit

IMPORTANT: You will see a lot of gobbledegook when you open up and you may think that the conversion has happened but don't panic just scroll down and you will find your programme in full!!! Cut and paste into Pages and voila!!!

I really hope this helps.
