Playback won't stop…

So the timeline is playing, I press the spacebar to stop playback, and the timeline doesn't stop playing but I am rewarded with a spinning beach ball and then then the application is unresponsive until the timeline has completely played. This timeline is 6 minutes long, so that's annoying.

Ideas?
