The normal first step with corrupted UI is to move the preference file out and let Aperture rebuild it.
See Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics (about 2/3'rds of the way down the page) for directions on how to do this.
If you still have problems post back.

Sorry for delay in responding, was traveling and wanted to spend some dedicated time on this.
I fillowed all the steps in Troubleshooting Basics including reloading the application, this was done before and also today when I downloaded the latest Aperture version 3.4.4.
Much of the application is working ok but the export dialogs are corrupt, if you do a F3 I can see them in background but unusable.
Another (feels related) issue is when I go to "File-Switch to Library", I see the dialog "Which library do you want to use" if I try to "create new" or "other library" it hangs for a few seconds and nothing happens.
This is a real problem because I have a big library and I am running out of options for moving items to a new library.
One last thing - holding Option and starting Aperture does not bring up the library selection dialog either - I am really running out of options.
Try to test, if Aperture is working when logged in from a different user account.
Use the "Guest" account or create a new user account from the "System Preferences > Users & Groups" panel. When signed in as new user launch Aperture, create a new library, if possible, import a few test images, and try to export. Does it work when using a differnet account?

Léonie
Ok very interesting - worked logging on as a guest user and importing a couple of photos into an empty Aperture environment. Not sure what to do next though?

That tells you the problem is with configurations in your regular user account or with the Aperture library you are using.
Have you removed the preferences, as Frank Caggiano recommended?
The normal first step with corrupted UI is to move the preference file out and let Aperture rebuild it.
And if you did, have you logged on and off after removing the preferences? The Trouble-shooting basic do not explicitely mention that this is necessary.
If you did not do that, repeat the removal of preferences.
And if they exist, delete
If this does not help, try to find out, what is different in your user account from the new account you created for testing.
I've been at this for hours - completed the steps above, cleaned up my trash, managed to move some items out to reduce folder size by dragging folders to desktop (this worked as it didn't access the dialog).
Still have the same problem - works ok as guest user not as myself.
I have been at this now a number of hours, I have compared all the settings I can think of, if you could be more specific as to what to look for under "start-up items" or "preference panes".
Many thanks for the input on this one.
Just to be clear, in the account that is not working you moved the com.apple.aperture.plist file out of the Preferences folder as per the Aperture 3 Troubleshooting Basics web page?
Unless I really screwed up following the instructions - yes, at this stage more than once including a logout.
Have you any Aperture plug-ins installed only for your user account?
Check
~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
And if you have not done so already, remove the presets - everything with ".plist" extension to a folder on your Desktop from the folder
~/Library/Application Support/Aperture
Log off and on again and try again.
Don't delete the files. It is a lot of work to recreate all the presets; if you keep them, you can simply put them back, if the test shows, that the files are o.k.
Could you include a screen shot of the dialog box. If we see what is wrong it might offer some clues.
See above link, the corrupt dialog is at bottom left.
Thanks for the help on this.
Gee that is messed up, never seen anything like it.
I reread all this and I see where this worked OK as a new user, have you tried it on a new library in your account?

😮 that really looks bad!
JFB 123, looking at your screenshot - you have rotated the browser. Do you see the same corruption, independent of the arrangement of viewer and browser?
Hotwheels22 has a similar problem - exactly the same broken "Export" panel with only the textfields showing, see:
