I am unable to copy files larger than 4GB to a USB which is presently MS-DOS (FAT) formatted. Grateful for advice please.

What is the capacity of the USB? Information needed...
Format it either exFAT if going to be used on both Windows and Mac or Mac Extended (Journaled) if going to be used only on Mac.
If formatting exFAT do that on a Windows PC as Mac screws that format up and any drive formatted exFAT on a Mac won't work on a Win PC.
