I want to set my I phone 4 back to factory settings but I am asked for a password but I don't remember setting one can anyone advise please?

When I reset my iphone 4s it asked for the passcode that I use to unlock it. Maybe that will work.

If you're trying to perform Erase All Content and Settings from your phone, it's asking for your Restrictions passcode. If you don't know it, try Recovery Mode. If that doesn't work, Google for DFU mode and try that.
